Introducing Brass Mix

An original series of graded pieces to support brass exams from 2023.

Brass Mix 1 and 2 offer a diverse choice of graded repertoire at Grades 1 to 5 that can be played by any brass instrument.

These books contain new arrangements of traditional tunes and works by a diverse range of composers. The pieces have been selected, arranged and written by brass specialists to align with ABRSM grades. Many are featured in the ABRSM 2023 Brass syllabus and in addition, all are ideal for the own-choice Performance Grade programme.

Brass Mix 1 (Grades 1-3) features 12 arrangements of works by a diverse range of composers, such as Ignatius Sancho, Ethel Smyth, Amanda Ira Aldridge, or from indigenous musical cultures.

Brass Mix 2 (Grades 4-5) will include 8 newly commissioned pieces, with works by composers from under-represented groups including Callum Au, Shanti Paul Jayasinha and Christopher Augustine. Fifteen of these pieces appear on lists in the new Brass Syllabus. The two books will be a key contribution to the diversity of the wider brass players’ canon as well as ABRSM’s own repertoire lists.

Key features of Brass Mix:

  • Written and arranged by brass specialists and educators, the repertoire covers a range of genres and styles.
  • Featured on the ABRSM Brass syllabuses from 2023 at Grades 1 to 5.
  • Perfect for players looking for own-choice repertoire in Performance Grades.
  • Piano and brass duet accompaniment options provide flexibility for students and teachers at Grades 1 to 3.
